The many West Virginians who do not have a Florida hideaway are peering out their homes’ windows seeking more sunshine and warmer temperatures as spring moves on. It is a wonderful time to present the return of a “Mountain State Mini” which was introduced in this column several years ago.
As may be recollected, this descriptor portrays a three-day vacation in a West Virginia setting where the family can once again enjoy the out-of-doors scene in a relaxed, warmer surrounding and avoid having to pack lots of clothes, drive many miles and have little time left for memorable activities.
A review of some possibilities is warranted. And, the drive certainly meets specifications, because it is less than an hour and the folks hosting the available recreational events certainly put-out the welcome-mat by offering a gigantic event-package for late spring and early summer.
Concentrating on our Highlands Region, the bright spots that appear are found in Canaan Valley, Blackwater Falls, the towns of Davis and Thomas, and an entire host of eating establishments occupying this area.

A painting workshop will also be offered during this time with expert instruction. What fun for teens to gain some painting tips as a local artist helps them fill a canvas.

Of course, dining facilities, a gift shop and their famous golf course are big attractions. The “kickoff” for golf will be Memorial Day Weekend, and my close observation saw those who manicure the greens already moving into the clubhouse to set up operations.
As I moved to Blackwater Falls State Park, stops in Davis and Thomas were informative. The famous Sirianni’s Restaurant was open and a large, cheesy pizza was on my mind. Soon, it was on my plate. Davis has several eateries from which to choose.
Likewise, Thomas is endowed with stops where pastries, ice cream and beverages can soothe appetites. Additionally, there are shops galore, and if one wants a new outfit or is buying summer birthday items, they will not be disappointed in either of these downtown areas. Both are always busy.
The big surprise of the day was moving onto Blackwater Falls State Park, where I discovered a series of newly-built cabins that were family-sized and beautiful. Wildlife claimed the new grass appearing in front yards and grazing deer only trotted away when they began to hear my camera click. So, this year, maybe it is time to eliminate the scorching sun of the sandy beaches.
The swap would be lots of scenery and fresh breezes sailing through heavy pine forests. Gas prices would not consume the holiday budget and some educational treats would await, so children could take away new knowledge and an appreciation for something besides assorted poorly-made movies or nuisance sunburns.
Design a Mountain State Mini of your own. Encounter other native West Virginians and let them provide entertainment they believe will result in true enjoyment. All of this state is known for being wild and wonderful. Take an opportunity to help children understand West Virginia’s interesting history and heroes.
We have had many proud moments as we review our ancestors and the principles which they believed and stood. Carrying many of these long-held understandings into future decades may be the difference between success and lack of it. It is clearly the responsibility of our adult population to extend training whenever the opportunity arises. What an opportunity exists with the study of this state’s values, skills and desire to succeed.
Let us do what we can to inspire young ones while making our home state the focus. They may just decide to stay here.
